Fintech Recruiters in San Francisco

San Francisco fintech recruiters

Your San Francisco fintech recruitment specialists

Nexus IT Group recruits fintech professionals for San Francisco employers: payment systems and financial software engineers, machine learning and data engineers, fraud and compliance engineers, platform and security engineers along with the CTOs and heads of engineering who run regulated products. We place contract, contract-to-hire and permanent staff across the sectors that make the Bay Area a distinct fintech market, from the payments platforms in SoMa and South San Francisco to the digital asset firms on Montgomery Street, the bank technology teams at Wells Fargo on Market Street and the card and issuing platforms across the water in Oakland.

Our San Francisco candidate network has been built over years of searches for payment companies, neobanks, lenders and digital asset firms across the metro. Every search runs outbound to passive engineers, with three calls before you see anyone and a shortlist within 4 days, the same fintech recruiting process we run for clients nationwide. Candidates are screened on the payment, banking or digital asset systems they have actually shipped, so the first interview is about fit rather than verification.

What shapes a San Francisco fintech search right now

Stablecoin rules close for comment in October

Treasury published its proposed GENIUS Act regulations on payment stablecoin issuance, offer and sale on 18 August 2026, and comments close on 19 October 2026. The proposal sets the terms on which a firm may issue or sell a payment stablecoin in the United States, which reaches the digital asset companies headquartered in the Financial District including Ripple, Kraken and Anchorage Digital. Compliance, custody and reporting engineering is being scoped against that timetable, so a search in this sector should expect candidates to ask what the regulatory roadmap looks like.

AI lab pay sets the ceiling

The median Bay Area software engineer reports $275,000 in total compensation, with the 25th percentile at $203,000 and the 75th at $380,000. Anthropic averages $887,500, OpenAI $800,000 and xAI $640,000 for the same platform and machine learning skills a fintech needs, and a machine learning engineer here has a median package of $326,000. A payments or risk platform hiring a senior engineer is bidding against those numbers, so the brief has to lead with product ownership and scope.

Chime is buying a bank

Chime agreed on 8 September 2026 to acquire Central Service Corporation, the parent of Stride Bank, for $590 million, and the deal needs approval from the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Bringing a bank charter in house moves core banking, compliance reporting and risk systems onto the roadmap of a company that until now has sat behind a partner bank. Work on that scale runs for quarters rather than weeks, so a San Francisco search for core banking, payments and risk engineers should expect contract and contract-to-hire briefs alongside permanent ones.

Attendance is the lowest of the ten Kastle cities

San Francisco office occupancy sat at 45.4% in the week to 2 September 2026 against a ten city average of 53.2%, on Kastle's Back to Work Barometer. Tuesday 1 September was the peak day nationally at 62.6%. An employer asking for five days in the Financial District or SoMa is drawing from a smaller pool than one asking for two, so the attendance rule has to be settled before the first approach.

SERVICES

Four ways to staff a San Francisco fintech team from a retained CTO search to contract build capacity

Executive Search (Retained)

We run retained searches for fintech leadership in San Francisco, including CTO, VP of Engineering, Head of Platform and the risk and compliance technology leaders that regulated products require. Investors frequently sit in on these processes, whether the company is a payments platform in SoMa or a digital asset firm on Montgomery Street, so the shortlist has to survive a board conversation as well as a technical one. Our retained placements hold a 96% candidate retention rate.

Direct Hire

Fintech engineers in San Francisco are courted heavily and rarely answer adverts, so our recruiters work outbound into payments, banking, lending and digital assets depending on what the role actually touches. We deliver a vetted shortlist within 4 days of taking the requirement. One New York asset manager with $5.6BN under management had us screen 287 candidates and submit six inside two weeks, with the hire starting five weeks after kickoff.

Contract Staffing

Regulatory deadlines, charter integrations and platform migrations arrive with dates attached and often need capacity rather than headcount, as the Chime and Stride Bank deal announced in September 2026 shows. We serve as both the recruiter and the W2 employer for the contract term, which keeps co-employment risk off your side and gives you a clean way to convert the engineer if the work becomes permanent. Our contract placements hold a 94.3% quality of hire ratio.

Recruitment as a Service

A Bay Area fintech scaling after a funding round is usually hiring across engineering, data and product at the same time, which is where per-placement fees stop making sense. Our Recruitment as a Service subscription handles candidate marketing, sourcing, screening and delivery for the whole plan, leaving your San Francisco engineers the technical assessment. We generate an engaged pipeline for a named fintech role in under 7 days.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about fintech recruiting in San Francisco

It starts with a discovery call to define the role, the stack, the regulatory context and the onsite expectation. From there our recruiters run an outbound campaign to passive engineers in the Bay Area market and hold three calls with each candidate before you see them, then deliver a shortlist of two or three. We stay in touch with every placed candidate for two years, and we travel for retained leadership searches.

Mostly the payments and card infrastructure companies in SoMa and South San Francisco, the neobanks and lenders in the Financial District, the business banking and spend platforms selling to startups and the digital asset firms on Montgomery Street, along with the card and issuing teams in Oakland. Those are the employers running platforms large enough to need specialist engineers, which is where an outside recruiter earns its fee. We also take searches from smaller Bay Area fintechs hiring their first payments or compliance engineer.

It depends on the role and on how far the compensation sits from the market. A payments engineer or data engineer search typically produces a shortlist within a week, while a machine learning engineer or CTO search takes longer because the same candidates are being courted by the AI labs. Current Bay Area salary bands are a reasonable first check on whether a budget is in range, and where we have an active pipeline we can deliver candidates the day the contract is signed.

Both, and the mix follows the work. Contract and contract-to-hire is common for charter integrations, platform migrations and regulatory remediation at the banks, neobanks and card platforms around the bay, while permanent placement and retained search cover the standing engineering and product teams. We are the W2 employer for the length of any contract, so the engineer can be converted later if the work proves ongoing.

Ask how many fintech roles they filled in the last twelve months and what their twelve-month retention is, then ask whether the recruiter on your search has placed the same role before. Our own figures are 96% of placed candidates still employed after twelve months and a 92% offer acceptance rate. A recruiter who cannot answer those questions for the Bay Area specifically is guessing at the market.
