Fintech Recruiters in Washington DC

Washington DC fintech recruiters

Your Washington DC fintech recruitment specialists

Nexus IT Group recruits fintech professionals for Washington DC employers: payment systems and financial software engineers, quantitative developers, fraud and compliance engineers, data and platform engineers along with the CTOs and heads of engineering who run regulated products. We place contract, contract-to-hire and permanent staff across the sectors that make Washington DC the country's housing finance and regulatory technology capital, from Fannie Mae and Farmer Mac downtown to Freddie Mac and Capital One in McLean, Navy Federal Credit Union in Vienna and Strategy in Tysons Corner.

Our Washington DC candidate network has been built over years of searches for government sponsored enterprises, credit unions, community banks and fintechs across the metro, out through Bethesda, Rockville, Reston and Alexandria. Every search runs outbound to passive engineers, with three calls before you see anyone and a shortlist within 4 days, the same fintech recruiting process we run for clients nationwide. Candidates are screened on the compliance, credit or payment systems they have actually shipped, so the first interview is about fit rather than verification.

Hiring fintech talent in Washington DC?

The Washington DC market

Where Washington DC hires fintech talent

Four sectors carry most of the demand, and fintech, digital assets and asset management carries the longest list of names, because Washington DC combines a global private equity firm with the country's bitcoin treasury, real estate crowdfunding and international student lending fintechs.

Fintech, digital assets and asset management

Bitcoin treasury, real estate crowdfunding and international student lending sit beside one of the world's largest private equity firms, with Carlyle distributing nearly $7 billion to clients in the second quarter of 2026 alone.

  • Strategy
  • Fundrise
  • MPOWER Financing
  • The Carlyle Group

Housing finance and government sponsored enterprises

Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Farmer Mac run the country's secondary mortgage and agricultural credit markets from the metro, with Fannie Mae posting its 34th consecutive quarterly profit in the second quarter of 2026.

  • Fannie Mae
  • Freddie Mac
  • Farmer Mac

Banks and credit unions

The credit unions and card issuers headquartered in Northern Virginia and Maryland run some of the largest consumer finance operations in the country, with Capital One reporting second quarter 2026 net income of $3.0 billion.

  • Capital One
  • Navy Federal Credit Union
  • Eagle Bancorp

Community and regional banks

Burke and Herbert, John Marshall and Capital Bancorp each list on Nasdaq in their own right under BHRB, JMSB and CBNK, running community banking technology out of Alexandria, Reston and Rockville rather than through a larger acquirer.

What shapes a Washington DC fintech search right now

Treasury writes the stablecoin rules from its own backyard

Treasury proposed regulations on 18 August 2026 implementing the GENIUS Act's limits on payment stablecoin issuance, offer and sale, with comments closing 19 October 2026, the licensing requirement taking effect 18 January 2027 and the ban on unlicensed issuance following 18 July 2028. The rule is written and enforced from the same city where Strategy in Tysons Corner already runs a bitcoin treasury business. Compliance, custody and payments engineering roles tied to a stablecoin licence are being staffed against those two dates now.

National pay sets the ceiling

The median Washington DC software engineer reports $250,000 in total compensation, with the 25th percentile at $186,950 and the 75th at $329,000, while Snap averages $577,000, OpenAI $555,000 and Snowflake $540,000 in the same metro. A GSE or bank hiring a senior engineer in McLean or Tysons is bidding against those figures rather than a typical contractor rate. The brief has to lead with scope and product ownership to compete.

Capital One is fourteen months into the Discover integration

Capital One said on 21 July 2026 that it is now fourteen months into integrating Discover and that the work is going well, after taking $298 million of Discover integration expense in the second quarter of 2026 alone. The work touches card processing, network routing and compliance systems run out of McLean. Platform, payments and compliance engineering roles tied to the integration are being staffed on a contract and contract to hire basis while it continues.

Office attendance trails the other big metros

Washington DC office occupancy sat at 50.2% in the week to 2 September 2026, up 4.4 points on the week before but still well below Austin's 70.9% and Dallas's 64.9% among the ten metros Kastle tracks. A McLean GSE and a Tysons Corner fintech rarely run the same in office schedule against that backdrop. A search has to settle which attendance rule the role actually carries before it goes to candidates.

SERVICES

Four ways to staff a Washington DC fintech team from a retained CTO search to contract build capacity

Executive Search (Retained)

We run retained searches for fintech leadership in Washington DC, including CTO, VP of Engineering, Head of Platform and the risk and compliance technology leaders that regulated products require. Investors and boards frequently sit in on these processes, whether the company is a GSE in McLean or a digital asset business in Tysons Corner, so the shortlist has to survive a board conversation as well as a technical one. Our retained placements hold a 96% candidate retention rate.

Direct Hire

Fintech engineers in Washington DC are courted heavily and rarely answer adverts, so our recruiters work outbound into housing finance, payments, credit unions and core banking depending on what the role actually touches. We deliver a vetted shortlist within 4 days of taking the requirement. One New York asset manager with $5.6BN under management had us screen 287 candidates and submit six inside two weeks, with the hire starting five weeks after kickoff.

Contract Staffing

Regulatory deadlines, integrations and licensing programs arrive with dates attached and often need capacity rather than headcount, as the GENIUS Act's January 2027 licensing date and Capital One's ongoing Discover integration both show. We serve as both the recruiter and the W2 employer for the contract term, which keeps co-employment risk off your side and gives you a clean way to convert the engineer if the work becomes permanent. Our contract placements hold a 94.3% quality of hire ratio.

Recruitment as a Service

A Washington DC fintech scaling after a funding round is usually hiring across engineering, data and product at the same time, which is where per placement fees stop making sense. Our Recruitment as a Service subscription handles candidate marketing, sourcing, screening and delivery for the whole plan, leaving your Washington DC engineers the technical assessment. We generate an engaged pipeline for a named fintech role in under 7 days.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about fintech recruiting in Washington DC

It starts with a discovery call to define the role, the stack, the regulatory context and the onsite expectation. From there our recruiters run an outbound campaign to passive engineers in the Washington DC market and hold three calls with each candidate before you see them, then deliver a shortlist of two or three. We stay in touch with every placed candidate for two years, and we travel for retained leadership searches.

Mostly the housing finance GSEs downtown and in McLean, the credit unions and banks headquartered in Northern Virginia and Maryland, the community banks in Alexandria, Reston and Rockville and the fintech, digital asset and asset management firms in DC and Tysons Corner. Those are the employers running platforms large enough to need specialist engineers, which is where an outside recruiter earns its fee. We also take searches from smaller Washington DC fintechs hiring their first payments or compliance engineer.

It depends on the role and on how far the compensation sits from the market. A payments engineer or data engineer search typically produces a shortlist within a week, while a quantitative developer or CTO search takes longer. Current Washington DC salary bands are a reasonable first check on whether a budget is in range, and where we have an active pipeline we can deliver candidates the day the contract is signed.

Both, and the mix follows the work. Contract and contract to hire is common for regulatory licensing programs, platform integrations and system migrations at Washington DC GSEs, banks and fintechs, while permanent placement and retained search cover the standing engineering and product teams. We are the W2 employer for the length of any contract, so the engineer can be converted later if the work proves ongoing.

Ask how many fintech roles they filled in the last twelve months and what their twelve month retention is, then ask whether the recruiter on your search has placed the same role before. Our own figures are 96% of placed candidates still employed after twelve months and a 92% offer acceptance rate. A recruiter who cannot answer those questions for Washington DC specifically is guessing at the market.
