Computer Vision Engineer Job Description Template

The computer vision engineer builds systems that extract useful information from images and video. The work covers data collection and annotation, model development, and the substantial engineering required to run inference within the latency, cost and hardware constraints of the actual deployment, which is often at the edge rather than in a data center.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and train models for vision tasks such as detection and segmentation
  • Design data collection and annotation processes
  • Implement image and video preprocessing pipelines
  • Optimize models for inference on the target hardware
  • Evaluate performance under realistic deployment conditions
  • Integrate vision models into applications or embedded systems
  • Monitor deployed model performance and handle drift
  • Investigate failure cases and improve robustness
  • Work with hardware teams on camera and sensor selection
  • Document model behavior, limitations and operating conditions

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years building computer vision systems
  • Strong Python and a deep learning framework
  • Experience with image processing and OpenCV
  • Understanding of model optimization for inference
  • Experience with annotation workflows and data quality
  • Ability to evaluate models under real world conditions rather than benchmarks alone
  • Familiarity with the deployment target, whether cloud, mobile or embedded
  • Good engineering practice

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with edge deployment and quantisation
  • Exposure to 3D vision or sensor fusion
