The blockchain consultant advises organizations on where distributed ledger technology fits, how to implement it and what it will cost them. The role spans strategy, technical assessment and delivery oversight, and its main value is often in preventing an expensive project that was never going to work. Credibility depends on genuine technical understanding rather than familiarity with the vocabulary.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Assess client use cases and their suitability for blockchain technology
- Produce feasibility studies and technical recommendations
- Design target architectures and implementation roadmaps
- Evaluate platforms, vendors and protocols against client needs
- Advise on regulatory, custody and operational risk considerations
- Support proof of concept and pilot delivery
- Educate client teams on the technology and its limits
- Estimate cost, effort and ongoing operational burden
- Review existing implementations and identify problems
- Present findings to executive stakeholders
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business, engineering or a related field
Required Skills and Experience
- 5+ years of consulting or advisory work including blockchain projects
- Genuine technical depth across chains, contracts and infrastructure
- Ability to challenge a client’s assumptions constructively
- Strong written analysis and executive presentation skills
- Understanding of the regulatory landscape
- Experience estimating cost and effort realistically
- Commercial judgment about which engagements are worth taking
- Broad awareness of platforms rather than a single stack
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience across financial services or supply chain use cases
- Prior delivery role before moving into advisory
