Layer 2 Engineer Job Description Template

The layer 2 engineer builds scaling systems that settle to a base chain, typically rollups with their sequencers, provers and bridge contracts. The engineering problem spans two environments at once and the security argument depends on getting the interaction between them exactly right, particularly around data availability, withdrawal proofs and what happens when the sequencer misbehaves or disappears.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain rollup components including sequencer and batching logic
  • Implement bridge contracts and withdrawal proof mechanisms
  • Work on proving systems or fraud proof implementations
  • Optimize data availability costs and batch compression
  • Ensure correctness of state commitments posted to the base layer
  • Design and test escape hatches and forced inclusion mechanisms
  • Monitor sequencer health, proving latency and settlement
  • Investigate discrepancies between layer 2 state and settled state
  • Support integrators building on the rollup
  • Contribute to specifications and open source rollup software

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years of blockchain engineering with layer 2 or rollup experience
  • Strong Rust, Go or Solidity depending on the component
  • Understanding of rollup architecture, data availability and settlement
  • Knowledge of fraud proofs or validity proofs and their trust assumptions
  • Experience with cross chain messaging and bridge security
  • Ability to reason about liveness failures and censorship resistance
  • Rigorous testing across both layers
  • Familiarity with the economics of data availability costs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with zero knowledge proving systems
  • Contributions to an open source rollup stack
