Protocol Engineer Job Description Template

The protocol engineer works on the blockchain itself rather than on applications built above it, covering consensus, networking, state management and execution. The work is systems engineering of a demanding kind, since the software has to stay correct and available across thousands of independently operated nodes with no way to coordinate an emergency fix. Correctness under adversarial conditions is the whole job.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement core protocol components including consensus and networking
  • Work on state storage, execution and transaction processing
  • Optimize node performance, memory use and synchronisation time
  • Implement and test protocol upgrades and hard fork coordination
  • Write specifications and improvement proposals for protocol changes
  • Build test harnesses covering adversarial and partition scenarios
  • Investigate consensus failures, chain splits and performance regressions
  • Review protocol code with attention to safety and liveness properties
  • Support node operators through upgrades and incidents
  • Contribute to open source client implementations

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 4+ years of systems engineering, with meaningful protocol level work
  • Strong Rust, Go or C++
  • Understanding of consensus algorithms and their safety and liveness guarantees
  • Experience with distributed systems and peer to peer networking
  • Ability to reason about Byzantine failure rather than only crash failure
  • Rigorous testing including fault injection
  • Familiarity with cryptographic primitives and their correct use
  • Public contributions to protocol or client software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience implementing a consensus algorithm
  • Formal methods or protocol verification background
