Content Strategist Job Description Template

The content strategist decides what content an organization should produce, for whom and to what end, then plans and governs the work that follows. The role is analytical as much as editorial, covering audience research, search demand, content auditing and the measurement that shows whether any of it is working. Its main contribution is usually deciding what not to produce.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Define content strategy aligned to audience needs and commercial objectives
  • Conduct content audits and identify gaps, overlaps and redundancy
  • Research audience needs and search demand
  • Build editorial plans and content calendars
  • Define content standards, structure and governance
  • Brief and review work from writers and other contributors
  • Establish measurement and report on content performance
  • Maintain and improve existing content rather than only producing new
  • Work with search, design and product teams on content delivery
  • Recommend retiring content that no longer earns its place

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, English or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 4+ years in content strategy or a closely related discipline
  • Experience conducting content audits at scale
  • Strong understanding of search demand and how it informs content
  • Ability to define and measure content performance meaningfully
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Experience establishing editorial standards and governance
  • Analytical approach rather than reliance on publishing volume
  • Ability to brief and develop other writers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a content management system migration
  • Background in both editorial and search disciplines
