API Integration Engineer Job Description Template

The API integration engineer connects a platform to the external services it depends on and exposes its own capabilities to partners. In financial services this means working with a wide range of provider quality, from modern documented APIs to legacy systems with fixed width files, and building integrations that stay reliable when the other side does not.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Build and maintain integrations with third party providers
• Design and document APIs exposed to partners and customers
• Implement authentication, rate limiting and error handling
• Build resilience including retries, circuit breakers and fallbacks
• Handle a range of formats from REST and webhooks to fixed width files
• Monitor integration health and partner availability
• Build reconciliation to detect data divergence between systems
• Support partner onboarding and technical enablement
• Investigate and resolve integration failures
• Maintain integration documentation and runbooks

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years building integrations in production
• Strong backend engineering and API design skills
• Experience with resilience patterns for unreliable dependencies
• Understanding of authentication standards including OAuth
• Ability to work with poorly documented or legacy interfaces
• Good observability practice across integration boundaries
• Experience with reconciliation and data consistency checks
• Clear technical documentation for partners

Preferred Qualifications

• Financial services integration experience
• Familiarity with open banking standards
