Quantitative Developer Job Description Template

The quantitative developer builds the software that research and trading run on, from data pipelines and backtesting frameworks through to production execution systems. The role sits between engineering and research and demands genuine skill in both, since code that is elegant but slow and code that is fast but wrong are equally useless here. Correctness under load is the standard.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the research and backtesting infrastructure
  • Implement research strategies as production trading code
  • Develop and optimize data pipelines for market and reference data
  • Write performance critical components where latency or throughput matters
  • Build tooling for monitoring, alerting and post trade analysis
  • Work with researchers to translate prototypes into robust systems
  • Maintain test coverage and deployment processes for trading code
  • Investigate production issues affecting strategies or data
  • Profile and optimize slow code paths
  • Review code and maintain engineering standards on the team

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years of software engineering experience in a trading or quantitative environment
  • Expert Python, plus C++ or another compiled language
  • Experience building data pipelines and working with time series data
  • Understanding of the research process and what backtests require
  • Strong testing discipline, since silent errors are costly here
  • Familiarity with Linux, version control and continuous integration
  • Ability to profile and optimize for latency or throughput
  • Clear communication with researchers and traders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with kdb+/q or another time series database
  • Exposure to low latency or exchange connectivity work
