HL7 Integration Engineer Job Description Template

The HL7 integration engineer builds and maintains the interfaces that move patient data between clinical systems. The work is detail intensive and consequential, since an error in mapping or patient matching can attach information to the wrong record. Much of the job is reconciling how two vendors have each interpreted the same standard differently.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Build and maintain HL7 interfaces between clinical systems
• Map message segments and fields accurately between systems
• Configure and operate an integration engine
• Design error handling, queuing and reprocessing
• Test interfaces including negative and boundary cases
• Monitor interface health and message throughput
• Troubleshoot message failures and data discrepancies in production
• Document interface specifications and mapping decisions
• Coordinate with vendors during interface development
• Support migration toward FHIR based integration

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, health informatics or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years of healthcare interface development
• Detailed knowledge of HL7 v2 message structures and segments
• Experience with an integration engine such as Mirth, Rhapsody or Cloverleaf
• Careful approach to patient identity and data mapping
• Ability to troubleshoot across systems from different vendors
• Understanding of PHI handling requirements
• Clear interface documentation
• Availability to support production interface issues

Preferred Qualifications

• FHIR experience
• Familiarity with DICOM or IHE profiles
