Interoperability Specialist Job Description Template

The interoperability specialist works on making health data flow between organizations rather than only between systems inside one, covering exchange networks, standards and the regulatory requirements that increasingly mandate data sharing. The role is part technical and part policy, since a great deal of what blocks interoperability is not technical at all.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Design and support health information exchange between organizations
• Implement standards based interfaces including FHIR APIs
• Support participation in exchange networks and frameworks
• Ensure compliance with information blocking and access requirements
• Manage patient matching and identity resolution across organizations
• Evaluate and onboard exchange partners
• Monitor exchange volumes, failures and data quality
• Advise on the regulatory requirements affecting data sharing
• Document exchange architecture and agreements
• Support audits and reporting on exchange activity

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in health informatics, computer science or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years working on healthcare interoperability
• Strong knowledge of FHIR and HL7 standards
• Understanding of health information exchange frameworks
• Familiarity with information blocking regulation and its requirements
• Experience with patient matching across organizations
• Ability to work with policy as well as technical requirements
• Clear documentation and stakeholder communication
• Understanding of consent and data sharing agreements

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with a regional or national exchange network
• Knowledge of USCDI and certification requirements
