Middle Office Analyst Job Description Template

The middle office analyst sits between the trading desk and back office operations, owning trade capture, position and profit and loss validation and the daily reporting the investment team relies on. The role is the first line of defense against bad data reaching a portfolio manager, and it demands the ability to spot when a number looks wrong before anyone acts on it.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Validate trade capture and resolve discrepancies with the desk and brokers
  • Produce and check daily profit and loss and position reporting
  • Reconcile front office records against operations and administrator data
  • Investigate profit and loss variances and explain their drivers
  • Support margin, financing and collateral monitoring
  • Maintain security master and pricing data quality
  • Prepare daily and weekly reporting packs for the investment team
  • Support risk reporting with clean position data
  • Assist with month end close and NAV review
  • Improve the reporting process and reduce manual steps

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 2+ years of middle office experience at a fund or bank
  • Ability to produce and explain daily profit and loss
  • Strong Excel skills, including working with large data sets
  • Understanding of pricing, valuation and the instruments the fund trades
  • Attention to detail and a habit of questioning odd numbers
  • Clear communication with traders and portfolio managers
  • Comfort with tight daily deadlines
  • Experience with a portfolio or order management system

Preferred Qualifications

  • SQL or Python for reporting automation
  • Derivatives product knowledge
