The director of engineering leads multiple teams through their managers, owning delivery, technical direction and the health of the organization. The role is where engineering strategy starts to become organizational design, since how teams are structured and what they own determines a great deal about what they can deliver and how quickly they can deliver it. Most of the leverage is in decisions made months before anyone notices the effect.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead engineering managers and their teams
- Own delivery across a group of teams and its predictability
- Design team structure and ownership boundaries
- Set technical standards and support architectural decisions
- Own hiring strategy and senior recruitment for the group
- Manage performance, development and succession
- Partner with product and design leadership on planning
- Own engineering budget and vendor decisions within the group
- Drive improvement in reliability, quality and delivery speed
- Represent engineering to executive leadership
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field
Required Skills and Experience
- 10+ years of engineering experience with 3+ managing managers
- Track record of delivery across multiple teams
- Experience designing team structures and ownership models
- Ability to develop engineering managers
- Strong technical judgment without micromanaging
- Budget and vendor management experience
- Clear executive communication
- Experience improving delivery and reliability measurably
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience scaling an engineering organization
- Background across both product and platform engineering
