The vice president of engineering owns the engineering organization and its ability to deliver reliably. The role covers structure, process, hiring, technical standards and the relationship with product and executive leadership. It is distinct from the chief technology officer role in being focused on execution and organization rather than on technology strategy and external positioning.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering organization and its leadership layer
- Own delivery predictability and the commitments the organization makes
- Design organizational structure and team ownership boundaries
- Set engineering standards for quality, reliability and security
- Own engineering hiring strategy and its execution
- Manage the engineering budget including tooling and infrastructure
- Partner with product leadership on planning and prioritization
- Develop engineering managers and directors
- Drive measurable improvement in delivery and reliability
- Report engineering performance to the executive team
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field
Required Skills and Experience
- 15+ years in engineering including leading leaders
- Track record of delivery at organizational scale
- Experience designing engineering organizations
- Ability to hire and develop engineering leaders
- Strong partnership with product leadership
- Budget ownership and vendor management
- Judgment about technical investment and debt
- Executive communication
