SaaS Architect Job Description Template

The SaaS architect designs the platform underneath the product, covering multi tenancy, scale, reliability and the boundaries between services. The role has to serve customers of very different sizes on the same infrastructure while keeping the cost of serving them sustainable, and it has to leave room for the product to change without a rewrite.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Design platform architecture including tenancy and isolation model
• Define service boundaries and integration patterns
• Design for scale, availability and disaster recovery
• Establish standards for data handling, security and access control
• Model infrastructure cost and design for sustainable unit economics
• Guide teams through significant architectural changes
• Evaluate technology choices and vendor dependencies
• Design extensibility points for customer specific requirements
• Review designs across teams for architectural consistency
• Document architecture decisions and the trade offs behind them

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 8+ years of engineering experience including architecture ownership
• Deep understanding of multi tenant SaaS architecture patterns
• Experience designing systems that scaled successfully
• Strong grasp of cloud infrastructure and its cost behavior
• Knowledge of security and data isolation requirements
• Ability to guide teams without becoming a bottleneck
• Excellent architectural documentation
• Judgment about when a simpler design is sufficient

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting enterprise customer requirements
• Background across more than one cloud provider
