The augmented and virtual reality interface designer works in three dimensions, where established interface conventions largely do not apply. The role has to account for physical comfort, depth, field of view and input methods that vary by device, and the consequences of getting it wrong include nausea rather than mere confusion. Testing in headset is not optional.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Design spatial interfaces for augmented and virtual reality
- Design interaction models for controllers, hands and gaze
- Account for comfort, field of view and physical ergonomics
- Prototype and test experiences in headset throughout the process
- Design onboarding for users unfamiliar with the medium
- Establish spatial design patterns and reusable components
- Work with engineers on rendering and performance constraints
- Design for varying play spaces and physical environments
- Consider accessibility including seated and limited mobility use
- Iterate based on observed physical behavior, not only stated preference
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in design, human computer interaction or equivalent portfolio experience
Required Skills and Experience
- 2+ years designing for augmented or virtual reality
- Portfolio of spatial or immersive work
- Understanding of comfort factors and motion sickness causes
- Experience prototyping and testing in headset
- Familiarity with Unity or Unreal at least at a design level
- Knowledge of spatial interaction patterns across devices
- Awareness of performance constraints on interface design
- Willingness to test extensively in the medium
