Interaction Designer Job Description Template

The interaction designer defines how a product behaves in response to what people do, covering flows, states, transitions and the feedback that tells someone what just happened. The role goes deeper into behavior than a generalist product designer typically does, and it matters most in products with genuine complexity where the interaction model has to be learned once and then trusted.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design interaction models, flows and system behavior
  • Define states, transitions and feedback for every interaction
  • Build prototypes that demonstrate behavior rather than appearance
  • Design for edge cases, errors and interrupted tasks
  • Establish interaction patterns within the design system
  • Test interaction models with users and refine them
  • Work with engineers on the feasibility of proposed behavior
  • Ensure interactions are accessible via keyboard and assistive technology
  • Document interaction specifications for implementation
  • Review built interfaces against the intended behavior

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in interaction design, human computer interaction or equivalent portfolio experience

Required Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years of interaction design on complex products
  • Portfolio showing behavior and flows, not only static screens
  • Strong prototyping skills
  • Systematic thinking about states and edge cases
  • Understanding of accessible interaction patterns
  • Ability to specify behavior precisely for engineers
  • Experience testing interaction models with users
  • Attention to feedback and system status

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with motion and transition design
  • Background in complex enterprise or technical products
