Mobile App Designer Job Description Template

The mobile app designer creates experiences for phones and tablets, working within platform conventions that users already know and constraints that desktop design does not have: small screens, one handed use, interruption and variable connectivity. Designing against the platform’s own patterns rather than with them is one of the most common causes of an app feeling wrong.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Design mobile application interfaces and flows
• Apply iOS and Android platform conventions appropriately
• Design for varying screen sizes and device capabilities
• Design offline and poor connectivity states
• Build prototypes for testing on device rather than on screen
• Design onboarding and permission request flows
• Ensure accessibility including dynamic type and screen reader support
• Work with mobile engineers on implementation constraints
• Design for interruption and resumption of tasks
• Review builds on device and refine the detail

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in design or equivalent portfolio experience

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years designing mobile applications
• Portfolio of shipped mobile products
• Deep familiarity with iOS and Android design guidelines
• Experience prototyping and testing on real devices
• Understanding of mobile accessibility features
• Awareness of platform capability differences
• Good collaboration with mobile engineers
• Attention to touch target sizing and one handed reach

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cross platform design systems
• Understanding of app store presentation requirements
