Motion Designer Job Description Template

The motion designer brings movement to products and marketing, covering interface transitions, animated explanation and video content. In a product context motion is functional rather than decorative: it shows relationships, directs attention and confirms that something happened, and the main discipline is restraint, since motion that draws attention to itself gets in the way.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design motion for interface transitions and micro interactions
  • Produce animated content for marketing and explanation
  • Define motion principles and timing standards for the design system
  • Prototype motion to communicate intent to engineers
  • Produce implementable specifications including easing and duration
  • Respect reduced motion preferences and accessibility requirements
  • Work with engineers on performant implementation
  • Produce video content and edit as required
  • Review implemented motion against the specification
  • Maintain a library of reusable motion assets

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in motion design, animation or equivalent portfolio experience

Required Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years of motion design for digital products or marketing
  • Portfolio demonstrating both interface and narrative motion
  • Proficiency with After Effects and Figma
  • Understanding of easing, timing and how motion communicates
  • Ability to specify motion in terms engineers can implement
  • Awareness of performance implications and reduced motion needs
  • Restraint about when motion is appropriate
  • Good collaboration with product designers and engineers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Lottie or code based animation
  • 3D animation capability
