UI/UX Designer Job Description Template

The UI and UX designer is responsible for both how a product works and how it looks, covering research, flows, interaction and the visual layer. The combined role is common outside very large design teams, and it suits people who can move between structural thinking about a flow and the detailed craft of a screen without losing either. The work is judged on whether people can complete what they came to do.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design user flows, wireframes and high fidelity interfaces
  • Conduct research and usability testing to inform design decisions
  • Build and maintain the design system and its components
  • Create prototypes to test interactions before they are built
  • Work with engineers through implementation and review the result
  • Apply accessibility standards throughout the design
  • Design for the full range of states including empty, loading and error
  • Present and justify design decisions to stakeholders
  • Analyze product data alongside qualitative research
  • Iterate designs based on observed usage

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in design, human computer interaction or equivalent portfolio experience

Required Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years of product design covering both interaction and visual work
  • Portfolio demonstrating complete work rather than only final screens
  • Proficiency with Figma and prototyping tools
  • Experience conducting usability testing
  • Understanding of accessibility requirements
  • Ability to design within an existing design system
  • Comfort working closely with engineers on implementation
  • Skill at explaining the reasoning behind design decisions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Front end knowledge sufficient to understand implementation constraints
  • Experience with design systems at scale
