UX Researcher Job Description Template

The UX researcher finds out what users actually do and need, rather than what the team assumes. The work spans interviews, usability testing, surveys and analysis, and its value depends entirely on methodological honesty, since research designed to confirm an existing plan is worse than no research at all. The hardest part of the job is usually getting findings acted on.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct qualitative and quantitative research studies
• Run usability testing on prototypes and live products
• Conduct user interviews and contextual inquiry
• Design surveys and analyze the results properly
• Synthesise findings into clear, actionable insight
• Build and maintain research repositories and participant panels
• Present findings to product, design and engineering teams
• Advocate for user needs in prioritization discussions
• Measure the effect of changes made in response to research
• Train colleagues to conduct lightweight research themselves

Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in human computer interaction, psychology, anthropology or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years of user research in a product environment
• Command of both qualitative and quantitative methods
• Ability to design studies that could disprove the team’s assumptions
• Skill at synthesizing findings into decisions rather than reports
• Experience recruiting and managing research participants
• Clear presentation of findings to skeptical audiences
• Understanding of statistical validity in survey work
• Persistence in getting findings acted upon

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with research operations and repositories
• Background in behavioral science
