Voice UI Designer Job Description Template

The voice interface designer creates experiences that work through speech, where there is no screen to fall back on and users cannot see what is possible. The design problems are distinctive: discoverability without a visual surface, recovery from misrecognition and conversations that have to stay short because listening to a long response is unpleasant.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Design conversational flows and dialogue for voice interfaces
• Write voice prompts that are clear and appropriately brief
• Design error recovery for misrecognition and unclear input
• Establish discoverability without visual affordances
• Design multimodal experiences where a screen is also present
• Test with real speech including accents and background noise
• Define persona and tone for the voice experience
• Work with engineers on intent coverage and system capability
• Analyze conversation logs to find failure patterns
• Iterate on prompts based on measured completion rates

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in design, linguistics, human computer interaction or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Experience

• 2+ years designing voice or conversational interfaces
• Strong writing skill for spoken rather than written language
• Understanding of speech recognition limitations
• Experience designing error recovery paths
• Ability to test with diverse voices and conditions
• Understanding of multimodal design where screens are involved
• Analytical approach to conversation logs
• Awareness of accessibility benefits and limits of voice

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with a major voice platform
• Background in linguistics or speech science
