The tokenomics specialist designs the economic system around a token: supply, distribution, incentives, governance rights and the mechanisms intended to align participants with the protocol’s long term health. It is an economics and modeling role rather than an engineering one, and the failure mode is well documented, since most token designs produce short term activity that disappears when the incentive stops.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Design token supply, emission and distribution schedules
- Model incentive mechanisms and the behavior they are likely to produce
- Simulate token economics under a range of adoption and market scenarios
- Design staking, locking and governance mechanisms
- Analyze the sustainability of emissions against protocol revenue
- Assess mercenary capital risk and design mitigations
- Work with legal counsel on the regulatory characteristics of the design
- Document the design clearly for the community and for investors
- Monitor live token metrics and propose parameter adjustments
- Support governance proposals with economic analysis
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in economics, finance, mathematics or a related field
Required Skills and Experience
- 3+ years working on token design, mechanism design or applied economics
- Strong modeling and simulation skills, typically in Python
- Understanding of game theory and incentive design
- Knowledge of existing token models and why several of them failed
- Ability to model emissions against realistic revenue assumptions
- Awareness of the regulatory sensitivity of token design
- Clear written communication for technical and non technical audiences
- Honesty about the limits of what a model predicts
Preferred Qualifications
- Published token design or governance research
- Experience through a token launch
