The web3 architect designs how a protocol fits together across contracts, off chain services, data and governance. The role decides which chain and which trust assumptions the product rests on, and those choices are hard to reverse once value is deployed. It requires depth across the stack and a clear head about the trade offs between decentralisation, cost and user experience.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Design the overall architecture of the protocol across on chain and off chain components
• Choose target chains, layer 2 networks and the trust assumptions they imply
• Define contract architecture, upgrade strategy and access control model
• Specify how off chain services interact with on chain state
• Design the data and indexing layer for scale
• Establish security review and deployment processes
• Evaluate protocols and infrastructure the design depends on
• Model cost, throughput and latency for the intended usage
• Guide engineers on implementation and review key decisions
• Document architecture and the reasoning behind the trade offs

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 6+ years of engineering experience with several in web3
• Deep understanding of smart contract architecture and upgrade patterns
• Command of the trade offs between chains, rollups and trust models
• Experience designing systems that have held significant value
• Strong grasp of smart contract and protocol security
• Ability to reason about decentralisation honestly rather than as marketing
• Clear architectural documentation and communication
• Track record of shipped protocol work

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience across multiple virtual machines
• Contributions to protocol standards or specifications
