Web3 Backend Engineer Job Description Template

The web3 backend engineer builds the off chain systems a protocol depends on: indexers, APIs, event processors, notification services and the infrastructure that keeps them in step with the chain. The distinctive challenge is that the source of truth is a distributed ledger that can reorganize, so the backend has to be correct about state that is not always final.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Build indexers and event processors that track on chain state
• Handle chain reorganizations without corrupting derived data
• Develop APIs serving protocol data to front ends and integrators
• Manage RPC infrastructure, providers and failover
• Build queues and workers for transaction submission and retry
• Implement monitoring for chain lag, missed events and data drift
• Optimize database schemas for high volume chain data
• Build reconciliation processes that verify derived state against the chain
• Support analytics and reporting on protocol activity
• Respond to incidents affecting data availability or accuracy

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years of backend engineering including blockchain data work
• Strong TypeScript, Go, Rust or Python
• Experience building indexers or event driven systems
• Understanding of chain finality, reorganizations and their consequences
• Proficiency with relational databases and query optimization
• Experience with RPC providers and node infrastructure
• Good observability practice for data correctness, not just uptime
• Ability to reason about eventual consistency

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience running blockchain nodes in production
• Familiarity with The Graph or a comparable indexing framework
