VP of Engineering Job Description Template

We are seeking an experienced VP of Engineering to expand, lead, and manage a diverse development team. This role will be an integral part of the senior leadership team, partnering with other leaders and executives to translate our company vision and strategy into engineering strategies that enable us to meet the changing needs of our business and customers. Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop standards and procedures to ensure consistent product quality 
  • Prepare and optimize budgets
  • Contribute to recruitment activities
  • Track and manage key KPIs to objective assess engineering’s progress against our roadmap
  • Oversee the preparation and approval of project plans
  • Conduct cost analysis for development projects and ensure projects are completed within budget
  • Prepare project schedule and completion dates
  • Work with business, product, and design leadership to determine optimal technical leadership strategy and structure
  • Lead the engineering team through management and mentorship
  • Foster a culture aligned with our values within engineering and across teams
  • Build systems and processes that enable our engineers to consistently deliver multiple concurrent projects on time and within budget
  • Collaborate with other technology leaders to employ industry best practices and drive innovation
  • Recommend technological developments and improvements 
  • Monitor all complaints and problems and ensure their timely resolution 
  • Analyze and document product specifications for various marketing trends

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering leadership
  • Experience working with stakeholders to create hiring strategies and develop quality teams
  • Experience scaling a team and developing engineering managers into leaders
  • Experience architecting and developing mobile product lines
  • Experience working in software design and developing customer-oriented platforms
  • Experience with hardware engineering
  • Experience managing a distributed team
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles and procedures
  • Knowledge of data structures and algorithms
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Excellent organization skills and high attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills 

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or similar advanced degree
