Frequently asked questions about hiring your next scrum master

A Scrum Master is a facilitator for an Agile development team. They are responsible for promoting and supporting Scrum by helping everyone understand Scrum theory, practices, rules, and values.

Look for certifications such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Professional Scrum Master (PSM), or similar. Also, consider candidates with strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience in Agile methodologies.

While a Project Manager typically manages the project’s overall scope, timeline, and resources, a Scrum Master focuses on facilitating the Scrum process, removing impediments for the team, and fostering an environment for high-performance teamwork.

Key responsibilities include facilitating Scrum events (sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives), coaching the team on Scrum practices, removing obstacles, and protecting the team from external interruptions and distractions.

Ask scenario-based questions about handling team conflicts, dealing with impediments, and facilitating Scrum events. Also, inquire about their experience with Agile tools and their approach to continuous improvement.

While technical knowledge can be beneficial, it’s not always necessary. The primary skills for a Scrum Master are process management, facilitation, and coaching. Industry-specific knowledge can be learned on the job.

Ideally, a Scrum Master should focus on one team to provide full support. However, in some organizations, a Scrum Master might work with 2-3 teams, depending on the teams’ maturity and the complexity of the projects.

A senior Scrum Master typically has more experience handling complex situations, may be more adept at organizational change management, and often has a deeper understanding of scaling Agile practices across multiple teams or departments.

A Scrum Master improves team performance by facilitating better communication, helping the team identify and remove impediments, promoting self-organization, and continuously looking for ways to improve the team’s processes and practices.
