Why I Love Being A Recruiter

I love being in recruitment.

Honestly, I believe I have the best job on the planet.

Despite this, 80% of those who start in this industry fail within the first two years, leave, and are never seen again.

It’s true that being a recruiter is difficult. And I believe it is becoming even more difficult in the present era.

The recruiting profession is highly exciting and can be very rewarding for years to come if you can acquire the persuasive abilities of a great recruiter.

The recruiting profession is often misunderstood and friends and family often ask me, “What is it that you do?”

After getting this question over and over again, I’ve decided to put it into words why I love the recruiting industry.  I hope this simple post will inspire some to get into and stay in the industry, and demonstrate to others what it is that we do.

Simply put, the best way to describe the recruiting industry is the following: People and Business.

People.

There is nothing that fascinates me more, never has been, and never will be.  My career, especially as I’m also a business leader, is 100% about people and relationships.  My clients are people, my consultants are people, my employees are people, and the services and IT solutions we provide are also all people focused.   People are intriguing, frustrating, passionate, annoying, fun, boring, clever, dumb, irrational, rational, strong, weak, single-minded, pliable, emotional, passive, dominant, detailed, sloppy, fearful, fearless, intuitive, knowledgeable, well-read, narrow-minded, interesting, aggressive, friendly, desperate, cynical, angry, happy, caring, selfish, and the list goes on and on.

I’m responsible and accountable for making sure that I introduce and connect the right people to each other, keep them interested as they “date,” manage all the delicacies of their individualisms and the process they go through, and then make sure they are happy thereafter.  Now, to do that well is no easy task. It’s varied.  It’s a journey, and it has its ups and downs, high and lows.  No other industry or job that I can think of would deal with people in such a concentrated way.

I get to be a trusted advisor for the soft stuff — people’s dreams and hopes and ambitions — and with the hard stuff — promotions, salary, and skill set advancement.  I’ve been doing this for awhile and find that I’m learning something new about making job hunts successful every day.  Helping people through what is one of the most stressful experiences in their lives is tremendously rewarding and fulfilling, and I love doing it every day.

Business.

Other than people, there is nothing that interests me more than business.  I get to see and listen to businesses and the people that make them run every day.  I get to learn about what works, what doesn’t, what’s new, what’s old, issues, solutions and everything in between.  I get to see them grow and develop.  I’m privy to insights and inside thoughts from the intern to the CEO.

I am responsible for listening, so I truly understand them and the challenges within the company.  I then get to present solutions and services.  I get to introduce people to them and watch them grow and benefit from this introduction.

The above can be thankless, painful, political, and difficult tasks, but it is satisfying in ways I cannot begin to describe (you have to live it to understand) when it all comes together in a positive outcome.

I love nexus IT group and I love recruitment because I love people and their differences and businesses and their challenges.

I love recruitment because it pays me to build relationships and to be involved with people in one of the most important aspects of their lives – their careers and their businesses. I get paid to do what I love.

IT Recruiting is a win-win-win situation.

Recruiting, unlike most business deals, are not a win-win situation. If I’m selling you a car, I’ll try to get the highest price possible, while you’ll try to get the best deal possible. One of us will feel like we’ve ‘won,’ while the other will be disappointed that we’ve ‘lost.’ In the ideal recruitment environment, though, everyone wins. Clients, candidates, and you should all be delighted. This isn’t as simple as it appears. There’s something incredibly satisfying about working on a project where everyone is thankful and pleased about the end… and then you get paid for it.

You produce fantastic results.
The best part about being a recruiter is that you get to make positive changes in people’s lives. The candidate is hesitant to go on an interview, but thanks to your persuasion abilities, they agree, perform, and get hired!

Because of something a client noticed in the résumé, they refuse to speak with your top prospect, but you insist, explaining that the person is greater than the paper, and the client relents, and your talent gets the job, gets promoted, and eventually becomes your client! This was the true buzz for me when I started recruiting. Getting things done. Keeping the process under control. On Fridays, I’d crack open a beer and reflect. If I hadn’t noticed the chance and affected the outcome, none of this would have happened. It’s way cool.

You have the ability to control your market.

You can raise yourself to a truly trusted advisor if you have longevity, retain integrity, and give service and outcomes that your customers want… and then recruitment becomes a lovely, and beautiful thing. Clients appreciate you, seek your counsel, and bring you into the tent since all of your work is exclusive, and all of your candidates come from references and commendations. You essentially “own” your patch, which is a fantastic feeling!
