SERVICES

Four ways to hire a Scrum Master, from a single team coach to an Agile transformation lead

Executive Search (Retained)

At the top of this discipline sit the Agile Coach, the Head of Agile Delivery and the transformation lead who moves a whole organization from older project methods to Scrum. These roles change how every team works, so searches are usually confidential and the shortlist meets your delivery leadership or executive team. We look for people who have scaled Agile practices across many teams and kept them working afterwards. Our retained placements hold a 96% candidate retention rate.

Direct Hire

Plenty of people hold a Scrum certification, so a job advert produces a long list that tells you little about who can actually coach a team. Our recruiters approach working Scrum Masters directly and screen on real practice: running sprint planning and retrospectives that change behavior, cleaning up a backlog, handling stakeholders and the difference between serving a team and managing a project. We can put a vetted shortlist in front of you within 4 days of taking the requirement.

Contract Staffing

Scrum Masters are often needed for a fixed period, such as getting a new team through its first quarters, steadying a delivery program that has slipped or covering a parental leave. We act as both the recruiter and the W2 employer for the contract term, which keeps co-employment risk on our side and lets you end, extend or convert the Scrum Master without a further fee. Our contract placements hold a 94.3% quality of hire ratio, measured on contractors who complete the full term.

Recruitment as a Service

An Agile rollout across several departments usually needs Scrum Masters for many teams at once, followed by steady hiring as more teams form. Our Recruitment as a Service subscription runs candidate marketing, sourcing, screening and delivery for the whole program, so your delivery leaders spend their time on final interviews alone. We build an engaged pipeline for a named Scrum Master role in under 7 days.

Frequently asked questions about hiring your next scrum master

A Scrum Master is a facilitator for an Agile development team. They are responsible for promoting and supporting Scrum by helping everyone understand Scrum theory, practices, rules, and values.

Look for certifications such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Professional Scrum Master (PSM), or similar. Also, consider candidates with strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience in Agile methodologies.

While a Project Manager typically manages the project’s overall scope, timeline, and resources, a Scrum Master focuses on facilitating the Scrum process, removing impediments for the team, and fostering an environment for high-performance teamwork.

Key responsibilities include facilitating Scrum events (sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives), coaching the team on Scrum practices, removing obstacles, and protecting the team from external interruptions and distractions.

Ask scenario-based questions about handling team conflicts, dealing with impediments, and facilitating Scrum events. Also, inquire about their experience with Agile tools and their approach to continuous improvement.

While technical knowledge can be beneficial, it’s not always necessary. The primary skills for a Scrum Master are process management, facilitation, and coaching. Industry-specific knowledge can be learned on the job.

Ideally, a Scrum Master should focus on one team to provide full support. However, in some organizations, a Scrum Master might work with 2-3 teams, depending on the teams’ maturity and the complexity of the projects.

A senior Scrum Master typically has more experience handling complex situations, may be more adept at organizational change management, and often has a deeper understanding of scaling Agile practices across multiple teams or departments.

A Scrum Master improves team performance by facilitating better communication, helping the team identify and remove impediments, promoting self-organization, and continuously looking for ways to improve the team’s processes and practices.
