Security Architect Job Description Template

The Security Architect ensures that the security requirements necessary to protect the organization’s business processes are adequately addressed in all aspects of the enterprise architecture. This role is responsible for the design, testing, and implementation of security systems within our IT network. A successful candidate will be experienced in information security and risk assessment, in addition to having strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, research, and design security architectures
  • Develop and review the installation requirements for LANs, WANs, VPNs, routers, firewalls, and similar network devices
  • Determine security protocols based on business strategies and requirements
  • Research and design public key infrastructures, certification authorities, and digital signatures, ensuring all personnel have access appropriate to their need and role in the organization
  • Prepare project timelines and cost estimates for system upgrades
  • Update, upgrade, and test the security system as needed
  • Establish disaster recovery procedures and conduct security breach drills
  • Respond to all security incidents and provide post-event analysis
  • Review security system measures, identify gaps in the security architecture, and implement improvements or enhancements as needed
  • Document and address the organization’s information security, cybersecurity architecture, and systems security engineering requirements
  • Employ secure configuration management processes

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in information security with a focus on security, performance, and reliability
  • Experience with the application of firewall concepts and functions
  • Experience with the installation, integration, and optimization of system components
  • Experience designing architectures and frameworks
  • Experience in areas such as identity and access management, application security, cryptography, secure system development, security incident management, and/or vulnerability management and penetration testing
  • Experience implementing security controls to improve system security
  • Knowledge of security implementations and current IT risks
  • Knowledge of enterprise information technology architecture concepts and patterns
  • Knowledge of business continuity and disaster recovery continuity
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering as applied to computer architecture
  • Knowledge of computer algorithms
  • Knowledge of remote access technology concepts
  • Excellent problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • IT security certifications, such as CISSP, CCSP, CCNA, or CompTIA Security+
