Data Architect Job Description Template

The Senior Data Architect will be responsible for ensuring the continuous delivery of on-premise and public cloud-based infrastructure, data, and application architectural solutions from strategy to implementation. Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the architecture, design, development, testing, launch into production, and ongoing maintenance of global data warehousing, operational, and reporting applications
  • Build and support our cloud-based and on-premise database management systems while recommending and implementing standard concepts, practices, and procedures across the organization
  • Lead the establishment of short- and long-term strategic objectives for continuous improvement solutions, operational efficiency, and application strategy
  • Own the evolution of architecture, analysis, and design documents, as well as the planning and oversight of all system testing
  • Take accountability for all technical code reviews and the approval of all software in the global enterprise, including all extract, transform, and load (ETL) functions from a variety of operational systems
  • Recommend data governance processes, security standards, and models that serve as architectural guidelines to support development initiatives
  • Develop and implement cloud infrastructure to support current and future business requirements
  • Design and develop high-volume data ingestion components and ETL solutions for data collection from a variety of internal and external sources
  • Create account information for authorized users to access databases 
  • Organize databases so that users can efficiently locate important documents
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to the team’s data warehouse and applications developers
  • Participate in strategic and tactical planning and design sessions with product management, BI, data engineering, architects, operations, and the development team
  • Ensure data quality and controls are in place to support diverse data ingestion, outflow, and flow processes
  • Manage and utilize tools for cloud-based data warehouse development and deployment, such as ETL tools, data quality and cleansing tools, query/reporting tools, OLAP and data mining tools
  • Drive decision-making processes to align with business objectives and priorities for key architecture solutions
  • Create and maintain multidimensional data cubes populated with data from the data warehouse
  • Evaluate the performance and storage needs of the data warehouse
  • Make important technological decisions regarding the applications of the global DWH and enterprise systems

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, computer engineering, or mathematics

Required Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in technical leadership overseeing the global data architecture, including strategy, design, development, testing, and support
  • 5+ years of experience in software development and support
  • 5+ years of experience developing global DWH software, including ETL, logical & physical data modeling, SQL & data access optimization, and reporting & analytics
  • 5+ years of experience monitoring DWH performance and implementing performance enhancements
  • Experience with data staging areas, cleansing and transformation mechanisms, star/snowflake schemas, and BI delivery mechanisms
  • Extensive familiarity with cloud data warehouse technologies and intricate data architecture and modeling
  • Expertise in designing architectures for large volumes of real-time data streams and component services
  • Experience and knowledge of big data technologies, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Amazon Redshift
  • Proven track record of delivering cloud data warehouse solutions and related components successfully
  • Knowledge of fault-tolerant architectures and high availability
  • Knowledge of system architecture relative to data warehouse infrastructure (Unix/AIX, MS SQL server, and NT system knowledge)
  • Strong global data warehousing technical expertise, including strategy, architecture, design, and production support
  • Strong knowledge of systems development life cycle methodology
  • Persistent problem solving capabilities
  • Strong communication and listening skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with customer contact centers and/or technology for customer contact centers
