Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Job Description Template

We are seeking an experienced marketing leader to join our executive team. You will enhance an already exceptional team of marketers by coaching and developing them as they execute. You will be responsible for constructing and evolving our initial brand, customer, and product marketing functions. In addition, you will lead our well-executed content, demand generation, design, lifecycle, and marketing operations functions. This individual will be responsible for helping us reach the next level of scale and establishing ourselves as the industry’s game-changing leader.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Own all of our company’s marketing efforts, including designing and managing the marketing strategy, constructing and leading the marketing organization, and integrating all of our efforts into our GTM plan
  • Evolve our brand positioning and strategy to resonate with our target consumers and drive them to take action
  • Oversee the creation of product marketing, messaging, and narratives for a diverse group of target consumers
  • Represent the voice of the market within the organization, sharing your ideas with sales, customer teams, product developers, engineers, and executive management
  • Work closely with sales and account management to assist them in achieving their revenue objectives
  • Provide team members with clear direction by establishing goals, prioritizing tasks, assigning responsibilities, and monitoring workflow
  • Ensure the growth and development of team members through leadership, skills coaching, and career mentoring to ensure that performance expectations are fulfilled and team members can pursue their own professional objectives
  • Collaborate with executive and team leaders in sales, customer service, account management, and product development to align your collective efforts with the company’s objectives

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, advertising, public relations, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

Required Skills and Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in B2B product marketing, brand marketing or similar fields
  • Experience developing, defining, leading and scaling marketing campaigns for B2B brands 
  • Experience directing effective brand-building campaigns and category-building projects
  • Experience building innovative and agile teams and coaching them to their full potential
  • Comprehensive understanding of marketing plans and strategies to increase brand recognition and gain excellent customers 
  • Track record of successful 0>1 and 1>N scaling
  • Ability to coach teams with diverse levels of experience, from entry-level to director, with a passion for development and training 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to serve as a cross-functional leader and thinking partner with a capability to look beyond the bounds of your function and team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading the marketing unit of a $100 million ARR company
