Linux Admin Job Description Template

We are seeking a Linux Administrator to help us manage Linux servers that are critical to our operations. The right candidate will have experience administering Linux servers and be able to troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise. This role will oversee all activities on our Linux servers, as well as providing 3rd-level support to users on basic and advanced desktop and server tasks. 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage, support, and maintain Linux installed systems
  • Install, upgrade, and maintain Linux based systems and servers
  • Ensure security of systems and data
  • Manage system backups and recovery
  • Manage and maintain printers, scanners, and data storage systems
  • Create and manage user accounts, groups, and services and work with users to resolve account or system issues
  • Support all Linux and UNIX-based applications
  • Assist with Linux server administration tasks 
  • Assist with automation of server maintenance, including running scripts and automated processes
  • Troubleshoot problems with servers running various versions of Linux, including Red Hat, Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, and/or SuSE
  • Perform continuous testing of new Linux versions and applications
  • Perform change control according to change control policies and procedures 
  • Maintain server uptime and network performance
  • Maintain server security and documentation 
  • Document all server incidents and outages 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in Linux System administration 
  • Experience providing 24/7 on-call support for highly complex distributed systems consisting of multi-tier client server and/or published applications, relational databases, and network components
  • Experience with Linux system architecture
  • Experience with Linux-based VPN clients, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, filesystems, and authentication 
  • Experience with fault detection, isolation, resolution, and root cause analysis
  • Experience developing in-house tools to automate problem detecting, simplify repetitive tasks, and consolidate multiple information sources 
  • Experience administering and engineering LDAP
  • Experience supporting Oracle-based SAP deployments
  • Expertise with at least one scripting or programming language such as Perl or Python
  • Knowledge of software architectures, lifecycle tactics, and system development
  • Knowledge of application servers such as Tomcat, Websphere, or Apache

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certification such as RHCSA or RHCE
