Technical Writer Job Description Template

We are seeking a Technical Writer who can produce high-quality documentation that contributes to the success of our projects and client satisfaction. In this role, you will translate complex, technical information into an easily understandable format. This position will work collaboratively with the technical and writing teams to interpret specifications, drawings, reports, and other data and use it to create technical documentation that meets the needs of both the business and our customers. To succeed in this role, you should have proven success in a technical field and the ability to analyze complex information. 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, outline, write, and edit content, working closely with technical team members to understand the project requirements
  • Gather information from subject matter experts
  • Develop comprehensive and user-friendly documentation
  • Write clear and comprehensible user interface text, online help, and developer guides
  • Create tutorials to help end users use a variety of applications
  • Research, create, and maintain information architecture templates
  • Develop content in alternative media forms for maximum usability
  • Evaluate current content and develop strategies to improve it
  • Edit other writers’ technical documents and manuals to ensure they meet customer specifications
  • Archive technical data to aid in future related projects
  • Communicate project status and deadlines with internal and external personnel

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a relevant technical or writing field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 2+ years of experience with technical writing
  • Experience in writing documentation and procedure manuals for various audiences
  • Experience working with engineers to improve the user experience, refine content, and create visuals and diagrams for technical support content
  • Experience with writing complete, complex technical documents in collaboration with internal and external personnel
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of software development 
  • Ability to quickly understand technical concepts and make them easily understandable through text and images
  • Excellent written communication skills with a sharp eye for detail
