CIO Job Description Template

We are in need of an information technology (IT) expert to join our leadership team as our Chief Information Officer. The CIO will take ownership of our company’s IT strategy and oversee the use of IT in our company, ensuring that all systems necessary to support our operations and objectives are in place. Our ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success in IT leadership roles and be current with the latest technological advancements as they apply to business operations. In addition, this role calls for strong leadership skills, well-developed business acumen, and a strategic mindset.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement objectives and strategies for the IT department
  • Select and implement technology to streamline and optimize internal operations
  • Design and customize technological systems and platforms to improve the customer experience
  • Plan the implementation of new systems and provide guidance on them to IT professionals and other staff in the organization
  • Establish and maintain partnerships and relationships with IT providers 
  • Set department budgets and review and approve purchases of hardware and software
  • Oversee the organization’s technological infrastructure
  • Plan and direct IT-related projects
  • Establish and track goals and timelines for IT projects
  • Plan and oversee maintenance, update, and upgrade processes for our IT infrastructure
  • Set the KPIs for the IT department
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in the field to discover approaches, tools, and improvements that can give the company a competitive advantage
  • Ensure the security of all information, digital data, computer systems, and networks
  • Troubleshoot and resolve IT issues as they arise
  • Analyze the cost, value, and risks of new technology solutions and make recommendations based on this information
  • Research and forecast emerging trends
  • Hire, train, and manage IT staff
  • Serve as a part of the executive team and take part in long-term business growth strategizing

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in IT or data management
  • 3+ years of experience in a supervisory or management role 
  • Experience designing and developing IT systems
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience establishing IT security policies and/or IT services framework
  • Knowledge of data analysis, business principles, budgeting, and operations
  • Knowledge of information security 
  • Knowledge of change management 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, and strategic thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in a technology or business field
