Head of Data Job Description Template

We are seeking a Head of Data to lead the design, development, and embedding of data in our organization. In this role, you will define and own our company’s data strategy and vision to unlock the potential of our data assets while ensuring compliance, security, and privacy. This includes being responsible for data security, the effective use and sharing of data, and developing insights to inform decisions and support the design and delivery of accessible and modern customer services. In addition, this role will lead a team of data experts and supporting staff, enabling colleagues to work in a data-rich environment that supports evidence-based decision making.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop a compelling data vision and strategy to help our company achieve its strategic objectives
• Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing development of our data and business intelligence strategy
• Define and implement data governance policies and procedures, establishing standards for data collection, storage, and security
• Develop and execute the data governance strategy for our company in alignment with business objectives
• Oversee the design and implementation of data-driven solutions
• Develop a scalable data infrastructure, including data pipelines, data lakes, and databases
• Create a performance framework using robust and up-to-date information 
• Maintain data systems to ensure data security and provide timely and actionable insights
• Oversee the effective utilization, performance, and deployment of data resources
• Lead and mentor a team of data science, data engineering, and analytics professionals
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify business challenges and opportunities where data can play a critical role
• Support leadership in developing their vision and priorities by delivering data-based insights 
• Serve as the primary subject matter expert on data and business intelligence for internal and external stakeholders
• Stay up-to-date with trends and advancements in the field and drive the adoption of advanced analytics techniques, machine learning, and other emerging technologies
• Communicate the data vision, strategy, progress, challenges, and opportunities to leadership

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, statistics, or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 5+ years of experience in a leadership data role
• 10+ years of experience working in a data-related role
• Experience developing and implementing data strategies to drive organizational change
• Experience creating and embedding new systems and process
• Experience working in a fast-paced environment that calls for a proactive approach to problem-solving
• Experience developing tools, frameworks, and approaches to collect and analyze business intelligence
• Experience working with GIS platforms and tools, PowerBI, tableau, or comparable dashboards and cloud-based storage
• Experience presenting data to inform decision making
• Knowledge of data management principles, data architecture, and data engineering practices
• Knowledge of data governance and related ethics
• Knowledge of statistical analysis, machine learning techniques, and advanced analytics methodologies
• Ability to develop long-term strategic ideas, approaches, and solutions
• Ability to translate complex ideas and information into meaningful information 
• Strong communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Masters degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field
