UNIX Admin Job Description Template

Our company is in search of an experienced UNIX administrator to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring UNIX server alerts, as well as the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux operating systems, server hardware, and UNIX systems. To succeed in this role, you should be able to quickly recognize issues, foresee upcoming risks, identify existing risks, and take the necessary action to correct them, in adherence with organizational policies and standards. 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, monitor, and upgrade UNIX system software
  • Maintain and support a multiple-server UNIX environment
  • Create and maintain UNIX user accounts and access management systems
  • Troubleshoot issues as they arise to resolve them with minimum service interruption
  • Detect, document, and resolve system outages or other issues encountered during operations, including collecting diagnostic data, developing workarounds, and accurately logging problems 
  • Establish backup, recovery, and security policies and UNIX administrator best practices
  • Contribute to the resolution of platform issues in a complex, multi-layered environment
  • Recommend hardware and software upgrades based on the organization’s needs and budget, and apply patches and upgrades as necessary
  • Lead and manage the administrative team for the UNIX server infrastructure

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years of experience with UNIX and Linux system administration
  • Experience monitoring and troubleshooting a UNIX platform
  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure architecture and deployment
  • Experience scripting automation using Perl or Shell
  • Experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting open source applications
  • Thorough knowledge of UNIX and Linux operating systems, network protocols, file systems, and storage environments
  • Knowledge of information technologies including server virtualization, cloud-based infrastructure, automation, and middleware
  • Knowledge of wired and wireless networking hardware and architectures
  • Familiarity with server configuration and automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with high availability, disaster recovery, and load balancer concepts
