At some point in your life, you probably exchanged those thoughts of what gave you the most joy for the things that are most practical. The demands of life require you to be able to buy food and gas, pay for a mortgage and perhaps support a family. Early childhood passions drift away because they haven’t been translated into the practical activities that sustain your life and your lifestyle.
Dig back into your childhood and find those activities and events that brought you the most joy. Even the type of play that you did should go on your list. Then ask yourself how those past experiences might help you now with your career choice.
A change in thinking
You might find you need to shift how you’re thinking in order to let your passions influence your future. Remove money from the equation, suggests Forbes. If money were not a factor, what would you like to do? If your career is really one that you love to do, then the money that comes with it will be appropriate. If your goal is to make a lot of money, and that is the focus, then you may find yourself working in a lot of places you don’t like.
If, as a child, you loved playing with the dogs in the neighborhood, this could easily be translated into a career of working with animals. By attending a vet assistant program at a school like Penn Foster, you can start a career working with all types of animals.
Perhaps you enjoyed learning how to do new things, then showing your friends and classmates what you learned. This could lead to teaching in your community. The goal is to find the essence of what gave you joy in those early childhood activities and create a path to the type of work achievable by you now.
When a passion no longer fits
If you discover that your early passions don’t make sense now, you can still find a away to get close, says The Muse. For example, if you were obsessed with becoming an astronaut when you were a child, you may find yourself at an age where that’s just not possible. In that case, begin looking at tangents that let you work in an area related to space and the space program. Engineers and programmers work build components that end up on the space station. Your work could end up on a rover on Mars one day.
You may have had a childhood dream of becoming a doctor or nurse, but the practical matters of life kept you away from that. There are ways to work in health care without spending years in college programs. A two-year degree or a diploma program could get you started as a medical assistant working in a hospital or clinic helping people.
