What Do Job Seekers Expect From Recruiters?

We often find ourselves asking this question more and more. So what is it that active and passive IT job seekers expect from recruiters? The dynamics that go into each interaction with a potential IT job seeker can range from a simple introductory conversation to providing consultation on market trends, to resume writing, to interview coaching. So why is it that so many job seekers don’t utilize the wide array of knowledge that IT recruiters bring to the table?

What is a Recruiter

A business expert who works on behalf of an organization to attract and process new employees is known as an employment recruiter. Their goal is to locate the most qualified individuals for the open positions at the organization. Recruiters may work for a single firm or for a recruiting service that helps several companies hire.

They recruit individuals using job fairs, online search engines, and networking events, among other methods. Recruiters typically conduct screening interviews to check fit before linking the candidate with the company directly, acting as a bridge between the firm and the prospective employee.

Types of Recruiters

Internal Recruiters

Internal recruiters are assigned to a certain department inside their organization, such as engineering, marketing, or finance. So, if you apply for a marketing job with a financial recruiter, you’ll almost certainly be disregarded. A referral from a current employee or someone who knows the recruiter is also more likely to be noticed than a generic email. Internal recruiters don’t usually maintain track of prior prospects, so save their name and email address in case you discover another suitable employment at their firm.

Agency Recruiters

External recruiters specialize in specific business areas and do not work for the company with the job opening. Some external recruiters, for example, only work with lawyers, while others specialize on fields such as entertainment. Many external recruiters are not compensated if they do not find a candidate who accepts the position. They may be competing with an internal recruiter who is also trying to fill a position, and if the internal recruiter discovers a better prospect, you may lose out if you’re the external recruiter’s candidate. However, don’t dismiss external recruiters; many are hired because an internal recruiter has exhausted their options and requires a subject matter expert. Because they may be recruiting for comparable opportunities at multiple firms, external recruiters typically preserve candidate databases.

When to reach out to a recruiter

You don’t have to wait for a recruiter to come to you if you’re looking for a new job. In fact, contacting one can be a good method to obtain your next job. However, you must understand how they operate. Consider the fact that most recruiters are in charge of more than 50 candidates at any given moment. So you’ve decided to go for a more targeted approach. Make sure the recruiter you’re speaking with hires for the sector and sort of position you’re looking for. Prepare any materials that they might want to screen before an interview by updating your LinkedIn profile and résumé, doing research on the organization or function in question, and preparing any materials that they might want to review before an interview. When you do make contact, be specific about what you’re looking for and why. You might receive some rapid traction if you’re a strong fit for an established role. But, if not, they can now consider you for future openings.

Finally, remember that while all recruiters strive to fill job positions fast and with the best candidates, they don’t work for you; they work for corporations. If you assist them in performing their duties, you will not only be assisting them in becoming successful, but you may also be assisting them in landing their ideal job.

Here are a few tips when working with a new recruiter:

  1. Transparent communication will only increase the candidate / job seeker relationship
  2. Sense of Urgency
  3. Define expectations early in the conversation
  4. Be honest about your salary and why you are looking for a new career…This will only help in the long run
  5. Ask the recruiter for guidance and what to expect throughout the process
  6. Set clear goals
  7. Don’t go around the recruiter thinking that you can do better on your own. Let the recruiter manage the process.
  8. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask hard questions. For example, “What areas of improvement do you recommend”, “What should I do differently”, “Why are you representing this company”, “What do you like most about your client”?
