The quantitative software engineer builds the systems that quantitative strategies depend on, with more emphasis on software engineering practice than on research itself. The role covers platform architecture, data infrastructure, deployment and reliability, applied to a domain where a silent numerical error is worse than an outage because nobody notices it.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and build platform components supporting quantitative research and trading
- Develop data infrastructure for large scale time series storage and retrieval
- Implement strategy execution and order management components
- Build observability into systems so failures surface quickly
- Maintain deployment, testing and release processes
- Work with researchers to define interfaces between research and production
- Improve system reliability and reduce operational toil
- Investigate incidents and drive fixes to root cause
- Review code and maintain engineering standards
- Document architecture and operational procedures
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related technical field
Required Skills and Experience
- 4+ years of software engineering experience, some in finance or another data intensive domain
- Strong Python plus a compiled language such as C++, Java or Rust
- Experience with distributed systems and data pipelines
- Understanding of testing strategies for numerical systems
- Familiarity with cloud or on premise infrastructure and containerisation
- Ability to design interfaces that researchers will actually use
- Good incident response and debugging skills
- Clear technical communication
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with time series databases
- Exposure to trading systems or exchange connectivity
