Quantitative Trader Job Description Template

The quantitative trader runs systematic strategies in live markets, monitoring their behavior, managing risk and intervening when conditions move outside what the model was built for. The role combines the discipline to let a working system run with the judgment to recognize when something has genuinely changed. It also carries responsibility for execution quality and for the operational health of the strategies.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Run and monitor systematic trading strategies during market hours
  • Manage risk, exposure and position limits in real time
  • Investigate strategy behavior that diverges from expectation
  • Manage execution quality and the parameters controlling it
  • Intervene or halt strategies when market conditions warrant it
  • Work with researchers on strategy improvements based on live observation
  • Monitor connectivity, data feeds and system health
  • Handle corporate actions, expiries and rolls affecting positions
  • Analyze daily profit and loss and attribute it to its sources
  • Maintain the operational runbook for each strategy

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline

Required Skills and Experience

  • 2+ years of systematic or electronic trading experience
  • Strong quantitative background and comfort with statistics
  • Proficiency with Python for analysis and monitoring
  • Understanding of market microstructure and execution mechanics
  • Judgment about when to intervene and when to leave a system alone
  • Composure during volatile markets and technical failures
  • Attention to operational detail around expiries and corporate actions
  • Clear communication with researchers and technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with futures, options or multiple asset classes
  • Exposure to co located or low latency trading
