Clinical Systems Engineer Job Description Template

The clinical systems engineer works where devices meet the clinical environment, covering integration with hospital systems, workflow fit and the technical support of products in live clinical use. The role requires both engineering skill and genuine understanding of how clinicians work, since a technically correct system that disrupts a clinical workflow will not be used.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Design and support integration between devices and clinical systems
• Work with clinical staff to understand workflow requirements
• Configure and validate device deployments in clinical environments
• Troubleshoot integration and interoperability issues on site
• Support clinical evaluation and usability studies
• Document system configuration and integration architecture
• Train clinical and biomedical engineering staff on the systems
• Feed clinical observations back into product development
• Support data flows between devices, EHR systems and clinical repositories
• Maintain compliance with hospital information security requirements

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, clinical engineering or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years of experience with clinical systems or medical device integration
• Understanding of hospital IT environments and their constraints
• Familiarity with HL7, DICOM or FHIR depending on the domain
• Ability to communicate effectively with clinical staff
• Troubleshooting skill across networks, devices and applications
• Understanding of clinical workflow and its priorities
• Awareness of patient safety implications of technical decisions
• Willingness to work on site in clinical settings
