Medical Imaging Software Engineer Job Description Template

The medical imaging software engineer builds systems that acquire, process, store and display clinical images. The work spans DICOM handling, image processing, rendering performance and the integration with the systems radiologists actually use. Accuracy in image handling is a patient safety issue, since a wrongly oriented or mislabeled image can lead directly to a wrong diagnosis.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop software for processing, storing and displaying medical images
• Implement DICOM parsing, networking and conformance
• Build image processing and reconstruction algorithms
• Optimize rendering performance for large image volumes
• Integrate with PACS, RIS and viewing workstations
• Implement measurement, annotation and comparison tools
• Validate image handling for orientation, scaling and metadata correctness
• Support regulatory documentation for imaging software
• Investigate image quality and display issues reported clinically
• Work with radiologists on workflow and usability

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, biomedical engineering or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years of medical imaging software development
• Strong understanding of the DICOM standard including networking services
• Experience with image processing and visualization
• Proficiency with C++ or another performance appropriate language
• Understanding of PACS environments and clinical imaging workflow
• Careful attention to orientation, scaling and metadata correctness
• Experience with regulated software development
• Ability to work with clinical users

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with 3D rendering or volumetric visualization
• Familiarity with ITK, VTK or comparable libraries
