Digital Health Engineer Job Description Template

The digital health engineer builds software products that support health outcomes, from patient applications and remote monitoring through to clinical decision support. Some of this software is regulated as a medical device and some is not, and knowing which side of that line a feature falls on is part of the job, since it changes the entire development process.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Build patient and clinician facing digital health applications
• Integrate with devices, wearables and clinical data sources
• Implement data privacy and security controls for health information
• Work with regulatory colleagues on whether features are regulated
• Build analytics supporting clinical and product decisions
• Design for accessibility and for users who may be unwell
• Support clinical validation studies with instrumented software
• Maintain documentation appropriate to the regulatory status of each feature
• Monitor product reliability and respond to issues affecting care
• Collaborate with clinical staff on requirements and usability

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, biomedical engineering or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years of software engineering including healthcare products
• Strong full stack or mobile development capability
• Understanding of health data privacy requirements
• Awareness of when software becomes a regulated medical device
• Experience integrating with health data sources or wearables
• Attention to accessibility and inclusive design
• Ability to work with clinical stakeholders
• Good testing and reliability practice

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with software as a medical device
• Background in behavior change or remote monitoring products
