HL7 / FHIR Integration Engineer Job Description Template

The HL7 and FHIR integration engineer connects clinical systems so that patient data moves correctly between them. The work covers interface development, message and resource mapping, error handling and the long process of reconciling how two systems each interpret a standard differently. Accuracy matters absolutely, since a mapping error can attach data to the wrong patient.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain HL7 v2 interfaces and FHIR API integrations
  • Map data between source and target systems accurately
  • Configure and manage integration engines and message routing
  • Design error handling, retry and reconciliation processes
  • Test interfaces thoroughly including negative and edge cases
  • Troubleshoot message failures and data discrepancies in production
  • Document interface specifications and mapping decisions
  • Work with vendors and clinical teams during implementation
  • Monitor interface health and message throughput
  • Support migration from legacy interfaces to FHIR based approaches

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, health informatics or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years of healthcare integration experience
  • Strong working knowledge of HL7 v2 message structures
  • Experience with FHIR resources and RESTful implementation
  • Familiarity with an integration engine such as Mirth, Rhapsody or Cloverleaf
  • Careful approach to patient data mapping and identity matching
  • Ability to troubleshoot across systems owned by different vendors
  • Understanding of PHI handling requirements
  • Clear interface documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with IHE profiles or CDA documents
  • Exposure to DICOM for imaging integration
