EHR / EMR Developer Job Description Template

The electronic health record developer builds and extends the systems clinicians use to document and retrieve patient care. The work covers configuration, custom development, integration and reporting within large vendor platforms, and it takes place inside a live clinical environment where changes affect how care is delivered from the moment they go in.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop and configure functionality within the EHR platform
• Build integrations between the record system and other clinical applications
• Develop clinical decision support rules and alerts
• Build reports and extracts for clinical and operational use
• Support upgrades, testing and validation of platform changes
• Troubleshoot issues reported by clinical users
• Work with clinical informatics staff on workflow design
• Maintain documentation of customizations and interfaces
• Follow change control appropriate to a live clinical system
• Support data migration and system implementation projects

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, health informatics or a related field

Required Skills and Experience

• 3+ years developing within an EHR platform such as Epic or Cerner
• Relevant platform certification where the vendor requires it
• Understanding of clinical workflow and documentation practice
• Experience with clinical data structures and reporting
• Familiarity with HL7 or FHIR integration
• Careful change management in a live clinical environment
• Ability to work with clinical staff on requirements
• Understanding of PHI handling obligations

Preferred Qualifications

• Epic or Cerner certification in a relevant module
• Experience with a system implementation or migration
